The intention is to encourage young people to experiment and express their ideas through photography. The local Guildford competition is the first step towards a district and for those who get through, a national final.

Taking the theme “Olympic Dreams” or “Olympic Spirit” entrants must submit 4 photographs (Max A4 size) to the Rotary Club of Guildford District by 9 January 2012, together with a short description of the inspiration for the photographs and how they feel they reflect the theme chosen. The choice of topic and interpretation within the theme is theirs.

Peter O’Keefe, President of the Guildford District Rotary, said: “As Guildford is one of the prime training hubs for Olympic teams and the last stop for the flame prior to its journey to London, this is an ideal way to fire the imagination of the young people in the area and encourage them to get involved with next year’s events. We would like to encourage as many young people as possible to take part.”

Competition rules, details and entry form

Photographs from the top entrants in each age group will be submitted to the district competition and a selection of photographs by the top two in each age group will be displayed at the Surrey Sports Park in Guildford. Winners from each age group in the Guildford round, will win a free three month family pass to Surrey Sports Park.

Join us on this year’s walk. Entrants collect as individuals, groups, clubs, schools, major charities, all raising money for their own selected good causes.

Please register at the Marshall’s tent on arrival and later to verify all returned safely to Shalford Park.

The 10k trail displays Surrey’s finest country side. Setting off across Shalford Park to cross the River Wey by footbridge, the new route takes the towpath South before diverting across to pick up and follow the old Crainley railway trail to Checkpoint 1, which is to be found at the disused Bramley Railway Station.

Here the route takes the B2128 and A281 roads to circumnavigate around St Catherine’s Prep School to meet and follow the footpath across Bramley Golf Course, continuing to pass directly across Munstead Heath Road and follow the footpath around the base of Farley Hill.

The route then turns at Bunkers Hill to go on to the outskirts of Farncombe and Checkpoint 2 which is to be located on the towpath at the rear of The Manor Inn pub.

The final stage follows the tow path of the River Wey Navigation North to Broadford Bridge A248 to pick up the footpath along the outskirts of Shalford and back up to Shalford Park.

Along the route, the Rotary Club of Guildford District members, families and friends organise checkpoints, where cards are stamped and free liquid refreshment dispenced for entrants and their dogs.

Toilet, free car parking and refreshment facilities ere available in Shalford Park.

Each entrant is individually responsible for collecting their sponsorship money and forwarding it to that charity.

As a guide for those wishing to enjoy the route of this trail it generally takes less than 4 hours. Stout foot wear is required as rain can leave lower sections muddy. The tracks are not suitable for wheel chairs or baby buggies.

Each year the evening is a great success by raising in excess of £20k for deserving causes. This year’s primary charity is to be Cherry Trees who provide respite care for
children and young people with severe learning and physical disabilities.

Proposed celebrity guests include Gold Medalist Vicki Hansford, nine other Paralympians and Olympians, wildlife artist David Shepherd, the Mayor of Woking, Rotary Dignitaries and our Sponsors Colbornes Garages.

Over 260 patrons enjoy a fine dinner, good company, a high roller game of Heads and Tails, grand raffle, quality boxing, and charity auction. The standard of the boxing each year is first class with 8 exciting bouts taking place under the direction of the ABA all arranged by the Guildford City ABC featuring some of their most promising boxers in keen competion from other clubs. Our sincere appreciation to all for their involvement.
